CONFLICT OVER A RESOURCE

Heathrow Terminal 5

What is the argument all about ?

Heathrow was built in London's Green Belt on top grade farmland using wartime regulations to avoid public examination of the plan. Since 1947 Heathrow has swallowed up so much land that its 4 terminals, 2 runways, roads, car parking, freight and service areas now cover close to 3000 acres. The tarmacked area alone is equivalent to 200 miles of 3 lane motorway.

Largely because of the airport, west London is the most congested part of the south east with constant development pressure on land and other resources and environmental problems such as air, water and noise pollution. Although this pressure is felt most by local communities and by London's Green Belt, the effect of Heathrow reaches far beyond West London.

. In 1994 over 51 million passengers travelled through Heathrow
. Air traffic is growing by about 5 per cent a year
.There are over 1,000 flight movements (taking off and landing) every day
. In peak times aircraft land or take off every 46 seconds
. Flight paths are over densely populated areas of London
. Noise levels can disturb up to half a million people
. Dumping of fuel as planes land can pollute tourist spots and open spaces such as     Kew Gardens as well as many of London's reservoirs
. Largely because of Heathrow, the west of London is one of the most congested     parts of the country with constant development pressure on land

Heathrow is often hailed as a great success but the real costs of this success are hidden. One thing is clear: continued expansion conflicts with the need to improve our quality of life, to protect people's health and their environment and to find more sustainable ways of living and doing business.
